Many, including Constantine’s father, knew the God of Christianity as the Supreme God who sent his son Jesus to earth. Constantine wanted proof that God existed. Therefore, he prayed diligently to God asking for a sign. As an answer to prayer, Constantine received a vision. He saw the cross of light above the sun with an inscription saying, “In hoc signo vinces” which means “by this symbol you will conquer”. Constantine and his whole army, who also saw the cross, were amazed. After seeing his vision around noon, he had a memorable dream that night. He claimed that God’s son had come to him along with the symbol he saw earlier that day. Jesus told him to fight under that symbol. This vision and dream convinced him that the Supreme God was real. The morning afterwards, he called together all of the best gold and precious stone workers to recreate the symbol. Some debate his conversion because he was not baptized until right before his death. This conversion contributed to his approval of Christianity as a religion.
